"Putting Feet to Your Faith"

Taking the First Steps with Jesus

Phase:  Come Follow Me
Timing:  1-2 years
Focus:  Learning the basics & consistent growth

LEARNING
Guided by the Holy Spirit1, a disciple learns and practices basic habits which help him/her develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ.2

A disciple:

  • prays.3
  • learns about, reads, and begins to internalize God's truth as found in the Bible.4
  • spends time with God daily, listening to, worshipping and praising Him.5
  • spends time with, learns from, and is accountable to other spiritually maturing believers.6
  • serves others by sharing his/her God-given time, talents, material wealth and spiritual gifts with others to grow the Kingdom. 7

KNOWLEDGE
As a disciple becomes more consistent and disciplined in these basic habits, faith increases, spiritual growth occurs,  and deeper insight is gained into what he/she believes and why.

A disciple:

  • recognizes God's power and authority over the spiritual and physical realms. 8
  • learns an eternal perspective concerning judgment, eternity, and the return of Christ. 9
  • learns that following Christ will require sacrifice and change in many areas of life, but strives to obey God anyway. 10

APPLICATION
A disciple begins to apply what he/she's learning in God's absolute word and makes life choices that lead toward a life that pleases God in both attitudes and actions.

A disciple:

  • shows evidence of a changed life (including, but not limited to these areas- faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, forgiveness, humility). 11
  • genuinely cares about other people. 12
  • resists evil and temptation with the help of the Holy Spirit. 13
  • is a good steward of material resources God gives, loves God more than money, and is generous.14
  • demonstrates moral purity and a commitment to marriage & family relationships.15
  • is respectful of those in positions of authority.16

OUTREACH
A disciple learns to talk about and exemplify his/her faith in the presence of others. Because of a growing love and concern for others, there is a desire to reach out to those who don't know Him.

A disciple:

  • prays for those he/she knows who don't have a growing relationship with God. 17
  • spends time with and reaches out to those who need Christ.  18
  • tells others about the Good News and how a relationship with God can change lives. 19
